Why is Empowered Leadership Important?
John Quincy Adams, the 6th President of the USA already had something to say about authentic and empowering leadership in the early 1800s.
Ask yourself, “Do you inspire others?”, “Do you empower those around you?”.
Why empowering leadership in the spotlight so much lately? And why should you care?
- Gen X (1965-1980) and Gen Y (1981-1996) are representing nearly 70% of today’s workforce. The former values a work-life balance and the latter is more growth-oriented, Yet, empowered leadership is what has proven to be an effective response to these new set of needs and expectations compared to the Baby Boomers (1946-1964) who are more work-centric and represent 25%.
- Creating a sustainable and enduring culture of empowerment requires you to be authentic. No matter the generation of your workforce. Boosting your levels of authenticity and empowerment are critical to establish this culture.

What is an Empowered Leader?
The empowered leader practices encouraging employees to manage themselves instead of supervising them directly. While this approach supports a high-level of independence, leaders still play an active role. Empowered leaders practice:

- Creating opportunities for growth and improving a team’s abilities.
- Giving employees more decision-making power.
- Highlighting people’s strengths and their work’s impact.
McKinsey once stated that genuine empowerment requires leaders to be involved, to be of service, to coach and mentor, to guide, to inspire – it means frequent, highly involved interactions, just of a different nature than the autocratic and controlling style. How do you become this person and behavior portrays empowerment? What do I need to improve upon and focus on? Are there tools, techniques, and concepts that I can benefit from?
